Yarrow (Achillea Tomentosa Aurea) is a perfect low-growing plant for the front of the border, as a ground cover, or in containers and pots. This delightful variety, known as Dwarf Yarrow or Woolly Yarrow, can be easily grown from seeds. The plant boasts a silvery fern-like foliage and brilliant golden flowers when in bloom.

This dwarf Achillea is highly attractive to bees and butterflies, and it makes a wonderful cut flower that also dries well. Yarrow has excellent drought tolerance and adapts to most soil types. However, fertilizing sparingly is recommended, as nitrogen-rich soil can lead to lush foliage production but reduced flowering.

Caring for Yarrow involves deadheading spent flowers, which promotes further blooming. After flowering, cut the plants back to the leaves to tidy them up and encourage the possibility of additional fall blooming. Dividing overcrowded clumps every 3-4 years is also beneficial. These Yarrows can be propagated through cuttings, division, or seed.

To grow Yarrow from seeds, sow them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil without covering them, as light aids germination. Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which typically takes 14-21 days. Alternatively, you can sow the Yarrow seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, thinning the seedlings to 12 inches apart.
